Hine-nui-te-pō is an atua (sacred ancestror) who stands at the threshold between worlds where she receives the spirits of the dead and guides them through Te Pō the long darkness into the realm beyond. While she embodies death, her power also lies in transformation—in releasing things past so that what will be can emerge. She is both an ending and a beginning, darkness and passage, a guardian and a liberator.
